In late June, the UAWP facilitated the first public meeting for the current planning and design phase of the South Arkansas River Restoration Project (SARRP). This project will target a 1.2 mile section of river in Salida from County Road 107 downstream to the confluence with the Arkansas River. This reach includes both public and private landowners, including a public section of stream in the former Vandaveer Ranch.
The UAWP project recently received a grant from the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (NPS-RTCA) program. This meeting introduced the NPS-RTCA program and started to build consensus among the many stakeholders with interest in this project.
Above, Bill Almquist, Community Development Director for the City of Salida, explains the city's planned development on the former Vandaveer Ranch and how the renaturalized river corridor will fit into the city's plan.
